How To Take Care of Your Refrigerator | Refrigerator Maintenance

The refrigerator is one of the most important appliances in the kitchen because it is used primarily for storing food. Its low temperature keeps fruits, veggies, and raw meat fresh. The cold temperature also hinders the growth of bacteria and effectively prevents spoilage. Because it is such a crucial piece of equipment for any household, it is necessary to learn how to take care of your fridge. Here are a few useful tips to follow:

1. Place It in the Most Optimal Location

Believe it or not, the location of the refrigerator affects its functionality. Ideally, it should not be placed in a hot area in the kitchen because the high temperature can cause the unit to fail. So, putting the fridge next to the microwave, stove, or oven is a no-no. Places where there is direct sunlight from the windows or door should also be avoided.

Wall and ceiling clearance should also be considered. The back of the fridge should be around 1 to 2 inches away from the wall. The top part and the sides, meanwhile, need at least 0.5 to 1 inch of clearance. These spaces allow the heat from the bottom part of the fridge to dissipate properly and prevent the unit from overheating.

2. Inspect the Gasket for Any Issue

The gasket is the long rubber strip that goes along the edges of the refrigerator’s door. It is specially designed to serve a very important purpose: provide an airtight seal to prevent any amount of heat from entering the unit when the door is closed. It is necessary to inspect the gasket regularly to ensure that it is functioning properly. Because if it is damaged, it can eventually lead to the unit breaking down, too.

A damaged gasket will allow certain amounts of heat to travel inside the fridge. The inconsistency of the temperature inside the unit may eventually cause malfunctioning. To prevent that from happening, contact an appliance repair specialist who knows how to fix a refrigerator and ask them for a gasket replacement.

3. Clean the Whole Fridge Regularly

Like any kitchen appliance, the refrigerator also needs to be cleaned regularly as part of its maintenance process. Here are a few tips on how to do it properly:

       – Take out all of its contents. Raw meat, fruits, and veggies should be temporarily stored in a separate cooler to prevent spoilage while the fridge is being cleaned.
       – Wipe the inside with a clean and dry piece of cloth to remove any visible dirt and get rid of spillage that has already crystallized.
       – Detach the drawers and shelves so they can be cleaned separately. Be extra careful when handling glass shelving because they can be a bit slippery when wet. Put them back inside the fridge once they are dry.
